Why Is My iPhone So Slow All of a Sudden?

iPhones are known to be among the smoothest running and most user-friendly phones out there and that’s why every new iPhone sells out before it even hits the market. To some, an iPhone is the ‘god’ of phones and they would sing its praises on and on. In as much as iPhones are excellently built, they could become faulty or slow with time and use. This much is inevitable for any device.

Is your iPhone so slow all of a sudden? Does it seem to be lagging with every tap?

If yes, then you are not alone. An iPhone getting slow is something a handful of people have experienced and while there are several reasons why this might happen, there are also ways to fix it.

Why Is My iPhone So Slow All of a Sudden? (Some Causes)

One thing that could make your iPhone so slow all of a sudden is low storage. IPhones consider 1GB of space to be low and this makes your phone try to free up space by removing things you don’t need or things that can be downloaded again when needed. It does this to provide the space you need to update your phone or store new data. This action could cause the phone to become unusably slow because it is working overtime and doing so many things at once.

Here are some other reasons why your iPhone is so slow all of a sudden:

Background Apps

Your iPhone could be running so slow because there are too many apps running in the background. Each app running takes up notable RAM space and the more your RAM space reduces, the slower your phone gets.

Your battery health is bound to reduce after years of use and this is another reason why your iPhone is slow. If your battery health is lower than 80%, your iPhone will be unable to run as normal, causing it to be slow. This could also affect some other functions on your phone.

If your phone is running on outdated software, it could cause it to become very slow. Updates come with performance improvements and not updating your iPhone software could make it slow and affect other functions on the phone. Your phone could also be slow if you are using an older model and running a more recent software update on it. To properly run recent software, your phone would need to be more recent.

Cold Weather

Most people are unaware of the effect of weather on the performance of a phone. If you are in a region with extreme weather conditions, it could have a significant effect on your iPhone’s performance. Like if you are in an extremely cold area, it would cause your phone to be a lot slower than normal. Phones generally work well in between 32- and 95-degrees Fahrenheit.

How to Speed Up My iPhone

To speed up your iPhone, the first thing we recommended would be to reboot it. Your iPhone might just need some rest after being worked for months without rest. To reboot your iPhone, hold the power OFF/ON button with either volume button until it goes OFF and comes back ON, displaying the Apple logo.

If this doesn’t get your phone working normally again, here are some other fixes to try:

Fix 2: Close Background Apps

If you have several apps open in the background, they will all be running and this could be a reason why your iPhone is so slow all of a sudden. To close all background apps, simply swipe up or double-click the home button and swipe up on each app to close it. You can also restart your phone after this to help it work better.

Asides from closing your apps, you could stop background app refresh on your iPhone. To do this:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘General’
  3. Then click on ‘Background App Refresh’, click on it again on the next page and select ‘OFF’

Fix 3: Update iOS

Updating your iPhone software is another way to help it work properly. To do this:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘General’
  3. Select ‘Software update’ and wait for your phone to display the available updates
  4. Then, click on ‘Download and Install’ to update your iPhone

If your iPhone is running low on storage, it will become slow and you will be unable to store any new data on your phone or install new apps. To fix this, simply uninstall apps you don’t use, offload apps you are not using currently, and delete large files, pictures, or videos from your phone.

To uninstall an app on your iPhone, simply tap and hold until a menu shows up. Then click ‘Remove app’ or follow these steps below:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’
  2. Click on ‘General’, then ‘iPhone storage’
  3. Select the app you want to uninstall and tap ‘Uninstall app

To offload an app on your iPhone:

  • Go to ‘Settings’
  • Click on ‘General’, then ‘iPhone storage’
  • Select the app you want to offload and tap ‘Offload app’

Fix 5: Turn OFF Automatic Downloads

Another fix to try when your iPhone is so slow all of a sudden is to turn off automatic download. This feature was introduced to help make life easier, but it tends to make your phone run slower because of the apps downloading and updating in the background. To turn this OFF:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’
  2. Scroll down and click ‘App Store’
  3. Then toggle off ‘Apps’, ‘App updates’, and ‘Automatic downloads’

Fix 6: Clear Ram

To get your iPhone working properly again, you could try this clear RAM trick. It is not the same as simply turning off or rebooting your phone. To clear your iPhone’s RAM:

  1. First, close all open apps
  2. Press and hold the power ON/OFF button until it shows ‘Slide to power OFF’
  3. Then press and hold the home button until the phone goes OFF and pops back ON almost immediately

Fix 7: Reduce Motion

There are certain animations that one might notice when switching between apps and although it makes the experience even better, it might be one of the reasons your iPhone is so slow all of a sudden. To reduce motion:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Accessibility’
  3. Then click on ‘Motion’ and toggle on ‘Reduce Motion’

Fix 8: The Big Reset

If none of the fixes above work for you, you might need to call in the big guns and reset your iPhone. This would take it back to its default state and erase all content on it along with whatever is making it slow. We strongly advise backing up your phone before taking this step. To reset your iPhone:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’
  2. Click ‘General’, scroll to the bottom, and tap ‘Reset’
  3. Then select ‘Erase all content and settings’
