Before buying or selling a phone, it’s important to know what mobile carriers it is compatible with. In the United States, four major carriers own and operate cellular networks. That’s AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint. These carriers lease cellular coverage and data bandwidth to small carriers, i.e., Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).
Some MVNOs operate only on one primary carrier’s network, while others roam on multiple. The carrier that an MVNO is under also tells you the type of cellular network it operates on: GSM or CDMA.
So to answer the question, is Boost Mobile, MetroPCS, Verizon, Cricket & Sprint GSM, or CDMA? Well, they operate on different networks. Most wireless carriers use either GSM (T-Mobile, AT&T) or CDMA (Sprint, Verizon) networks.
To know which carrier you have, check the “About” section of your phone. If your phone has a MEID or an ESN category, it is CDMA compatible; if it has an IMEI category, it is GSM compatible.
